The ultimate objective of my work is to initiate a complex and dynamic dialogue with the viewer. I rely on the experiences and a unique narrative the audience brings to my art. Even if that narrative is not immediately identified the exchange starts as the viewer becomes cognizant of a connection to the painting.
Originally studying to be a cinematographer at NYU I appropriated my visual storytelling techniques into my art. In the FIELDS series I explore impressions - be they literary, musical or emotional - on my soul through color and the meditative process of painting.
DUALITIES is an interpretation and an analyses of human behavior along with its causes and consequences. The newest series to join the site are TUMBLED, SPHERES, and RE:FORMATION. You can find more about each series on their respective main pages. A series of photographs from my recent travels to Moscow, Vienna and Prague can be found on the PHOTOGRAPHY section of the site. More images will soon be addes from the trips to Arizona and Paris.
About the creative process: My paintings on canvas are often created using hundreds of layers of pigments. Various pigment transparencies allow for the creation of depth and rhythm while the process of addition and subtraction is symbolic of our own communication and behavioral tendencies. Works in the MEANDERINGS series are on paper and employ a unique pourng and blowing technique, while MEDITATIONS are drawn on hand-pressed cotton and linen fiber paper and then "washed" with oil glazes.
For this new series of works on paper, which is currently only available to view at the studio, I chose watercolors and gouache, the two media that I have not worked with before and was interested in exploring. I also returned to the idea of working with an intentionally restricted color palette of blacks, ochres, whites, blues and browns and create compositions on a much smaller scale. My intent with these watercolors is to create certain intimacy and intensity that challenges the confines of the pictorial space. The palette is a direct reference to the works of Kline, Serra, Diebenkorn and Marden, the scale of course is in proportional contrast to theirs.
I work on several canvases at once and each time the process is very organic and meditative. Colors are selected instinctively allowing the subconscious to initiate the selections. My paintings are unconfined from a pre-conceived final image. Each painting develops at its own pace, independent of assumptions. They are allowed to mature, sometimes waiting for me to catch-up...
